Wool and Silk Rugs Founder Contributes to "Turquoise Mountain: Artists Transforming Afghanistan" Smithsonian Exhibit

CEDAR GROVE, NJ — Wool and Silk Rugs announced Erbil Tezcan's contribution to the exhibit "Turquoise Mountain: Artists Transforming Afghanistan" at the Smithsonian Museum. This immersive exhibition will convert the Smithsonian’s International Gallery into a space that evokes the vibrant marketplace of Old Kabul with artisans demonstrating their skills in jewelry making, woodworking, calligraphy, ceramics, carpet weaving and other crafts.

Erbil, founder and owner of Wool and Silk Rugs, was asked to represent the Carpet Workshop for the exhibit, which was organized by the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and the Turquoise Mountain Trust. In addition to the beautiful rugs from the company's Afghan Collection, Erbil designed a magnificent "History Rug" specifically for this exhibit.

The exhibit opened on March 5, 2016 and will remain on display through January 29, 2017 at the Smithsonian Museum's Freer/Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Turquoise Mountain is a British charity based in Afghanistan that works with Afghan artisans and architects to revive the country’s cultural heritage and revitalize Murad Khani, Kabul’s historic Old City where artisans live and work. Established in 2006, Turquoise Mountain was founded at the request of HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales. Turquoise Mountain/Wool & Silk Collaboration

Erbil Tezcan is a Turkish rug designer who has been designing rugs since 2000 and has won the Carpet Design Award six years in a row, including 2016.

Mr. Tezcan works with artisans and weavers supported by Turquoise Mountain, therefore he was a natural choice for collaboration in the upcoming Smithsonian exhibition. Erbil designed a massive, 12 x 16, one-of-a- king rug that attempts to tell the entire history of Afghan rug design. He spent six weeks researching and selecting antique rugs, ultimately taking inspiration from 20 designs. The rug was woven in Northern Afghanistan by Turquoise Mountain supported artisans and will be a centerpiece of the exhibition.

For the Smithsonian exhibition, Erbil also created a “Silk Road” collection consisting of 4 different rugs inspired by different locations along the Silk Road trading route, all produced by artisans in Afghanistan from Ghazni wool, a high quality wool found in the Afghan highlands. All 4 rugs are available in multiple sizes and can be viewed at woolandsilkrugs.com

Erbil chose Afghanistan to produce his rugs because it is one of the last places in the world where every step is carried out by hand – from shearing the sheep, to washing and dyeing the wool, to weaving and finishing the rug. All of the that are part of the Smithsonian exhibition are made using these time honored traditions.
